Four Die In Hospital Fire At Charlottetown

Fire at the Caleonyaod Hospital for the Insane in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island killed four patients and left many injured. The blaze, fueled by snow and sleet, destroyed the upper west men’s wing and spread to nearby structures. Firefighters police and volunteers worked to control violent inmates and prevent greater loss amid inadequate water supply and extensive property damage estimated at $250,000 to $500,000.

Economists Call for Balancing of Budgets in 1932

Cleveland expert Col Leonard Po Ayres of the Cleveland Trust Company urges balanced operating budgets as the key to business recovery. He tells the Chamber of Commerce that income should rise and spending fall to create a net margin, applying the same rule to national, state, municipal, corporate, and personal finances. He argues the policy must start now, before recovery.

Forecast indicates fair conditions in Ohio tonight and Wednesday with a slight warming on Wednesday. Record shows yesterday’s high in Miami and temperatures in Cochrane 18, Modena 14 below zero. Generally the 36 hour outlook expects continued fair weather with little temperature change under existing pressure distribution.

Eighteen to receive citizenship papers at Elyria event

Eighteen foreign-born residents of Elyria and vicinity will receive U S citizenship certificates tomorrow night at a Citizenship Night program at the First Congregational Church. The event, under the Daughters of the American Revolution, replaces prior Social Settlement Association efforts. Howard R. Butler will be principal speaker. local organizations sponsor parts in the program set for 7 30 P M. The meeting is open to the public.

Students Enjoy Roman Banquet at Elyria High School

The Samentes Club, Latin students at Elyria High, staged an annual Roman banquet with senior officers hosting as the "slaves" for a three course dinner. Readings by Phyllis Pearson and others, radio skits, music, and a dance filled the program between courses.

Loram County opens tuberculosis sanatorium on Wednesday

The Loram County Tuberculosis Sanatorium will be officially opened tomorrow with public tours from 2 to 4 PM and 6 30 to 2 PM. Dr H J Gammons superintendent and staff of attendants and nurses will guide visitors, highlighting modern equipment. Cost was about $425,000 under county commissioners and building commission. Over 60 patients will move in between December 1 and December 20, with plans to fill capacity soon. More than 30 TB cases now cared for outside will be moved to the local hospital.

Sanatorium Head Has Had Wide Experience

Dr. H F Gammons appointed superintendent at Lorain County Tuberculosis Sanatorium after a long career in tuberculosis care. A Boston University graduate with twenty two years in TB treatment, he served in state sanatoria and private clinics across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New York before relocating to Amherst, Ohio in June. He previously led the Niagara Sanatorium in Lockport, New York since June 1928.

Two Men Robbed at Amherst Plants by Masked Thieves

Two masked gunmen robbed W. G. Nord and H. H. VanKeuren of the Il & Automatic Company at Amherst and stole about six dollars in cash three checks and a pocketbook. The burglars forced entry by breaking a window and escaped around the corner before vanishing. Police are investigating with no suspects yet.

Underhill Seeks Republican Nomination for Sheriff

Leon Underhill of Carlisle township announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for sheriff at the May primaries. He won the party nomination in 1926 but lost to Democratic candidate E. G. Mathews. Underhill has resided in Torrain County twenty years and has never held public office.

Captain Frederick A. Laidley of Covington dies at his home at age 90. A veteran steamboat man on the Ohio River, he began life in the Kanawha Valley and made his first Ohio trip as a boy on a salt flatboat bound for Cincinnati packing houses.

Bandits Rob Highland State Bank In Mass Robbery

A gang robbed Highland State Bank of 3000 dollars and bonds before fleeing in a car. Police and county officers pursued with a fusillade of bullets and shotgun slugs exchanged with the robbers. A state police report said the bandit car passed through Lansing Illinois as the motorized posse closed in.

Hon John T P Green 87 a colored man known as Dean of the Cuyahoga County Bar and Mrs Greene are guests of Judge A R Webber. Green recalled rising from slavery with janitor work and muscle to build a home for his mother, admitted to the bar in 1870, serving as Justice of the Peace, and as a legislator who introduced Ohio Labor Day. Democrats Allow Individual Votes On Hoover Moratorium Policy

Democratic leaders announced that House and Senate members may vote their own views on President Hoover's moratorium proposal. Ask Factories To Help In Campaign In Elyria

Elyria factories and industrial plants are urged to fill empty stockings for Christmas. Police Chief E J Stankard said non perishable foods will be collected, with a December 22 deadline. About half the crews have pledged participation and a designated donation date per plant is to be set. Canned goods fruits and vegetables are favored to ease holiday baskets.
