Near Saigon U S infantry beat back a major NVA assault 25 miles northwest of Saigon as 39 enemy troops were killed. The 25th Infantry Division also reported light American losses. 22 NVA soldiers surrendered in a mass defection, and the 101st Airborne arrived in force during a major airlift.

A Delta rocket launched Pioneer 8 to a sun orbit to study solar radiation and its effect on astronauts. The mission also carries the TTS relay satellite to exercise Apollo tracking, linking Pioneer 6 7 and other probes to monitor solar events for future manned flights.
In Athens King Constantine reportedly led troops toward the capital amid a coup attempt against the military regime. Tanks secured key sites including the royal palace and radio stations as the king urged democracy while the junta warned of counteraction.

The William J. Stuart murder trial moves into its fifth day in Lorain County Common Pleas Court as jurors view the scene of Larry Rodgers’s death on 4149 Belle Ave in Sheffield Lake. Rodgers, 30, was slain Oct 6 when investigators say Stuart, estranged from his wife Beverly, 31, broke into a locked bedroom at their home. The jury selectie list includes 12 regulars and two alternates from Lorain and nearby towns. Prosecutors Grinda Horvath Curci and defense attorneys Gerald Smith and Dale Barnard lead the case.
Elyria craftsman Frank Remshak 76 of West River Road contributes yearly to The Chronicle Telegram Not Forgotten Box. This year his 78 handmade pieces include rockers tables chairs trains dolls and animal pull toys. A retired crane operator born in Germany who arrived in 1902 and moved from California to Elyria in 1928, he supports needy children through year round woodworking and gifts.
