Boy's Heroic Act Almost Costs His Life

Janes Andress sixteen of 145 East Bridge Street near Ly cost his life while skating with Robert Adams thirteen of East River and Quincy streets on the hickory just north of Broad Street Bridge. An unidentified boy asked which arch was safest to skate through the center arch. Ice cracked and Andress plunged under but clung to edge. Jim Adams started to rescue but ice cracked again and he went in head first. Robert Adams fetched help as Andress and Jim fought to stay afloat. Albert Andress rushed up with clothes line to aid, while rescuers from the opposite river freed the other boy. The tale ends with the longest minutes in cold water.

Sailor Rescues 36 Comrades in Bay of Fundy

Harold Hansen a 26 year old Norwegian sailor swam 40 yards through icy water against undertow to pull a life line from the drifting freighter King County. The ship ran aground in fog seven miles northwest of St John New Brunswick with its hull ripped open. Hansen saved 36 crew members and described the act as nothing, amid disbelief from fellow sailors.

Mrs. Helen Battee aged 90 who was wheelchair bound by paralysis perished when her Harlem township home burned late yesterday. Authorities believe she tried to light a kerosene lamp and it toppled to the floor sparking the blaze.

Warehouse Fire Destroys Arcanum Tobacco Branch

A branch warehouse of the Miami Valley Tobacco Co. in Arcanum was wiped out by a fire late yesterday valued at about 100000 dollars. A defective flue caused the blaze, said Homer Yeant, the manager, with about a half million pounds of tobacco burned in the loss.

Truck Fire Injures Two Detroit Men Near Wellington

Albert Bonney and Joe Bowman of Detroit suffered severe burns on their hands when their truck loaded with sheet steel caught fire one and a half miles west of Wellington on Route 18. They pulled over to clear a gas line, using a torch for illumination. wind blew flames into the line, engulfing the vehicle, which was completely demolished. Three Killed By Gas Fumes At New Hampshire Mill

BERLIN New Hampshire December 12 Three men died and six others were overcome when poison gas filled the digester room at Burgess Mills. Names given include I W Estabrook 62 of Gorham bricklayer father of two, Joseph Accardi 47 Berlin mason tender father of four, and Joseph Tatangelo 58 Berlin yard man father of three. About 30 workers were in the room. six more were hospitalized and a dozen treated on site. Gas suspected to originate from a defective exhaust on another digester tank.
