The final installment of back pay owed Elyria police and other employees was paid today. The retroactive raises total 15.7 percent for members of the two police unions since January 1980. Firefighters had received theirs on Dec. 1 and the issue spurred a blue flu walk-out in August.
Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority officials Ron Ashley and Frank Glass face charges for allowing residents to use ovens for heat at Riverview Plaza. A pretrial hearing occurred in Elyria Municipal Court as Ashley and Glass pleaded innocent to charges tied to unsafe heat practices. Jeffery Solomon, sentenced nine years in federal prison on a drug charge, was indicted this week on two counts of carrying a concealed weapon from a summer traffic stop in Elyria involving a rental car with fictitious plates.
A fire in NORTH RIDGEVILLE at 5881 Olive St damaged a home owned by Jeffrey Steele and occupied by the Stevens family. The fire started about 2 30 p.m when a child playing with a cigarette lighter caused the blaze. Firemen remained on site until 3 45 p.m. No injuries were reported.
