Market drifts lower on light trading as yearend tax losses weigh
New York markets opened modestly lower with the Dow off from 891.07 around 11 a.m. as declines outpaced advances. NYSE turnover ran about 10.83 million shares versus 12.7 million the prior day while analysts cited tax loss selling and portfolio adjustments as the week’s prevailing trend toward year end. No single leadership emerged as the market neared the year’s end and profit taking at the Dow 890 level continued to dampen prices.
