Ohio House approves first state income tax in history

The Ohio House voted 56 to 42 to approve the first state income tax, with 43 Democrats and 13 Republicans backing. The Senate already approved. Gov. Gilligan is expected to sign, making residents begin paying 4 to 3 percent personal tax in January plus a 4 to 8 percent corporate tax. The package raises $790.6 million in new taxes and includes tax relief provisions, education and welfare spending boosts, and additional levies on cigarette tobacco and banks.

Bomb blasts kills four shoppers in Belfast store

Ohio Readies First Tax Bite With Jan 1 Withholding

Ohio's Finance Department announces the new personal income tax will begin withholding from all paychecks on January 1. For a family of four, weekly taxes scale from 36 cents at 100 dollars weekly to 8.68 dollars at 500 dollars weekly. quarterly payments apply to non-deducted income. Annual returns due by April 15, 1973, with severance taxes quarterly and corporate installments on Jan 31, March 31, May 31. banks and stocks pay an extra 1 mill in June.
