Cleveland GM John Hart assembled seven potential starters for five rotation spots, adding Ben McDonald and Dwight Gooden as free agents and trading for Steve Karsay. McDonald, recovering from shoulder surgery, and Gooden, with past suspensions, join a staff led by Nagy and Colon as the Indians pursue depth and bullpen support.
The Cleveland Indians swap Kenny Lofton for three pitchers and ship Marquis Grissom to Milwaukee, a sequence critics call brutal business. Lofton’s stance and Grissom’s fading role illustrate how teams chase needs while fans lose patience with players.
Analysis notes trading ANAL for Steve Karsay and Lofton’s health to drive a potential World Series run. Lofton on base near 400, Vizquel to move up, Wilson or Branson at second, with Alomar behind. Pitching risks loom if McDonald Karsay and Gooden return, but Hart’s moves could yield big returns.
Journal reports from Atlanta describe Kenny Lofton as a standout lead off hitter and positive clubhouse force while Grissom lands in a distant role. Braves manager Bobby Cox is portrayed as favoring Lofton over Grissom, with Hart claiming Lofton strengthens the team and improves morale.
