Weather storms test Elyria drivers as week ends
Friday rain sleet and snow struck the area with ice causing slick highways and nearly 30 accidents in a 24 hour span starting Friday morning. North Ridgeville observer Ray Diederich noted 63 inches of rain and about a half inch of snow as overnight temperatures fell to 22 degrees. No serious injuries were reported.

Rhodes OKs pay bill and vetoes governor raise
Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes approved a 28.6 percent pay raise for state legislators with a 31.5 percent boost for most elected officials. He vetoed the governor's salary increase from 50 000 to 60 000 and the lieutenant governor's from 30 000 to 35 000 as inflationary. The measure, sent by House Speaker Vernal G. Riffe Jr. and Senate leaders, would have also raised county auditors and some county commissioners.

Fire at Ellisville State School Leaves Fifteen Dead
In Ellisville Mississippi a fatal fire tore through the clothes room of the Ellisville State School for the developmentally disabled. Fifteen women over 40 died from smoke inhalation while 32 others were injured. Staff evacuated residents as 14 died in the ward room and one later at the infirmary. Thirteen remained at the infirmary with 19 sent to Jones County Community Hospital. The blaze was extinguished quickly after alarms at 2 20 a m. The director Dr Paul Cotten said the smoke caused the deaths and described it as a tremendous amount of smoke.

Truck rips school bus four die in Texas crash
A radioactive material laden oil field service truck collided broadside with a McCaulley High School bus carrying basketball teams on a rural Texas highway. Four students died and 22 were injured as witnesses described a devastating scene. Four deceased were Rita Wilkerson, 14, Brit Jeffrey, 15, Bonnie Pippin, 17, and Lolita Perales, 17. The incident occurred at an intersection with a flashing yellow light. The truck driver Bill Dixon, 21, and other bus passenger Tami Jeffrey, 15, were among the injured.
