Early Schools of Camden Chronicle of 1850s reform
In 1851 Ohio adopted a new constitution providing state funds for a thorough common schools system while barring sectarian control. The 1853 school law centralized management at the township level, created a board of education, and shifted tax levies to the township, with districts and sub districts reporting to clerks and local directors. Meeting notes from April 18 1853 show a two mill tax vote for tuition after state funds, plus detailed district expenditures, school house repairs, and new district formations. The record traces enrollment, district reorganization, and school finances through 1854 1855 and beyond, noting fluctuating enrollments and evolving governance as Camden expanded and connected Kipton Station.
