Ohio House passes pension bill raising municipal share
The Ohio House approved HB 296 by 66 to 25 to boost municipal contributions to the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund from 19.5 to 24 percent over six years. The measure moves to the Senate, then the governor, with Mayors like Elyria’s Kevin Brubaker opposing the higher cost and potential service cuts. Proponents say pension security requires higher employer funding amid past benefit cuts. Municipalities currently pay about $300 million yearly. final 24 percent could add nearly $80 million in annual costs.
