Columbus judge dissolves special liquor grand jury
Common Pleas Judge Robert M. Draper dissolved the special grand jury investigating alleged influence peddling in the state Liquor Department after Franklin County Prosecutor Earl W. Allison disclosed that the jury foreman John Melville failed to reveal his criminal record on a routine juror questionnaire. Draper ordered the records impounded and not released without approval from Allison or Attorney General Mark McElroy. The six weeks of work may be referred to the regular grand jury next January, with possible handover to incoming Attorney General William Saxbe or Governor James A. Rhodes if needed. Draper, who lost reelection, said he would not leave a lawsuit to a future jury and criticized the idea of continuing the grand jury as a misstep.

Swiss diving dream ends in tragedy in Long Beach
Swiss diver Peter Small 35 and colleague Fleury Nigh died after a deep sea dive during an experiment to use a gaseous mixture to enable skinlike diving. Keller and Whittaker, a London student, survived, while a coast guard search failed to locate Whittaker. The dive, supported by the US Navy and private oil interests, aimed to cut decompression time but ended with embolism and suspected gas bubbles from pressure. The project leader said it was a scientific success despite the deaths.
