Washington reports Russia has begun shipping 1128 jet bombers from Cuba. The Defense Department cited intelligence showing photographs of three TL28 bombers and said the fleet, with engines dismantled, should be off the island by December 2 under Khrushchev’s promise to Premier Malenkov.
The Chronicle Telegram invites readers to bring new toys to the newspaper lobby for Salvation Army distribution through the Christmas Clearing House. Toys may be expensive or inexpensive and should not be wrapped unless necessary. If wrapped, mark contents and age range. The drive runs through December 13.
A northbound Louisville and Nashville freight train carrying a secret AEC shipment derailed five miles north of Marietta Georgia. Twenty four cars of the 67 total derailed near U.S. 41 causing a 12 hour track clearance forecast. AEC officials reported no bombs or radioactivity danger but withheld shipment details. Two guards were injured lightly and treated before returning to duty.
United Press International reports a statewide push against Sunday sales, with citations issued in suburban Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus and Findlay. In Toledo 21 establishments were cited, 3 summonses issued, and in Columbus police bought items at three stores for evidence. Cincinnati saw two discount houses and one business cited.
In Lorain a patrolman delayed pursuing two youths for strong-arm robbery after traffic blocked his crossing. Pt Frederck Bauer witnessed Irvin Boley robbed on Broadway 1500 block and pursued one suspect, firing a shot. Suspects Rufus McGee 18 and an 11 year old ally held. Boley jailed for intoxication after hospital treatment.
Sunny and warm again today with highs 58 to 65. Tonight will not be as cool, lows 35 to 40. Tuesday mostly cloudy with little temperature change. Five day forecast shows temperatures 8 to 12 degrees above normal across northern Ohio, with scattering showers Tuesday night or Wednesday and again late in the week. Rain totals may reach 0.1 to 0.3 inch.
Prime Minister Nehru said Chinese Communists appear to pull troops from rear zones while holding front positions along India's North East Frontier. He called the situation confusing and stopped short of accusing Peking of breaking its word. Beijing had announced a withdrawal from the eastern border sector the previous Saturday.
Washington United Press International reports Captain Edward Bechtold of Eastern Air Lines died when his four engine jet crashed at Idlewild Airport. Bechtold had written a column for Arrhit trade magazine arguing Runway 4 safety margins were dangerously thin and urging an instrument landing system on Runways 12 and 31R. Investigators suggest weather and misjudged approaches contributed to the fatal incident.
United States naturalization ceremony details list 62 individuals being welcomed as new citizens in Lorain County on the first page. The second section notes Santa Claus arriving in Big Tia that night.
In Cincinnati Santa Claus was arrested for violating Ohio's Sunday Closing Law while mingling with children and handing out gifts. Harold Scalf, owner of Econo-Factor discount house, wore a Santa suit to open on a Sunday despite a warning. Detective Chief Carl Myers cited Scalf after checking about 25 places, a crackdown tied to a failed measure to amend the law in the November election.
