Public Debt Tops 226 Billion As Budget Hopes Waver
Washington budget experts project a 946 million program near the $100 billion annual pace for 1945 and 1946. As of November 30 total expenditures reach 37.6 billion with receipts at 13.0 billion, leaving a large deficit and a public debt around 226.5 billion. Morgenthau notes November deficit and potential 1945 deficit reduction if receipts improve and debt service remains tight. Germany and Japan run deficits with price controls, currency manipulation and postwar planning.
