Founding Oberlin College and its abolition stand
Oberlin College traces its origins to 1832 when John J. Shippard and Stewart urged building a school on land donated in Russia Township. Finney joined the colonists, the school opened 1833 with about forty scholars, and Oberlin became a leading abolitionist beacon, defying the Fugitive Slave Law and aiding escaped slaves via the Underground Railroad.
