Elyria adopts a 26 mill city tax rate, up 4.4 mills from the prior level. Tax bills rise to 26 per 1000 valuation, adding about 4.50 per 1000. The hike, the highest in city history, funds schools after a November vote for a 25 mill operating levy.
A 24 hour walkout by National Tube Company coke plant workers ended at 11 p.m. yesterday as employees returned to work. The stoppage shut three blast furnaces and reduced output in two others, affecting No 2 blooming mill and likely cutting production by about 6000 tons of Iran. Plant Supt Robert Urquhart cited unknown cause but believed linked to a coke oven workers suspension for alleged rule violations. Full operation to resume today with about three days to full recovery.
Linens In Bowendy of 32 Riverside Homes and Carlene Higgins of 1432 Broadway Lorain were treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital after an automobile accident at Kingsley's corners Routes 57 and 76. Linens suffered a fractured hip while Higgins received abrasions to the forehead and hand.

Close to a thousand residents attended the open house and dedication of the remodeled Town Hall and Fire Station in Wellington. Max C. Shreiber editor of the German edition of Reader's Digest visited Elyria during the public open house at the Chronicle Telegram building. He is uncle to Mrs David Coe and discussed the Korean War and the German edition produced in Stuttgart with editions for Germany Austria and Switzerland. The German Digest is widely read in Germany with a 342000 domestic August circulation and many copies reaching Eastern Germany under inflation.
At a Paris disarmament meeting the United States pressed the Soviet Union to admit UN inspectors the day after any UN decision outlawing atomic weapons. Vishinsky posed a counter question as Western delegates sought to break the East‑West deadlock in talks spanning through next Monday.
Ray mond C. Cronin 45 died by suicide at his home 409 East avenue after despondency over his wife’s death two years earlier. His body was found hanging by a door in his bedroom shortly after noon by Denis J. Ryan Jr., his business partner. Cronin had planned for Ryan to pick up medicine and visit the home. A note asked Ryan to notify Cronin’s brother Commander John Cronin of the US Public Health Department in Washington, and included hopes to see his late wife Helen. Survived by his brother, A nuece, two nephews. Born Oct 13 1906 in Springfield Ohio, he lived in the area most of his life, attended Miami University, served 33 months as a Navy lieutenant in WWII, and belonged to several local organizations. The body was at Harold Dicken Funeral Home. services Tuesday at 2 p.m. with burial at St Mary’s Cemetery.
Approximately 1,500 men, women and children visited the new Chroniele-Telegram building for an open house yesterday afternoon and evening. Staff members welcomed guests and answered questions as crowds toured the departments. The plant will be open again this evening from 7 to 10.
Elyria park superintendent John Madhock reports two small Christmas trees set along Ely Park walks for the holiday season were stolen over the weekend. The city valued each tree at 150 dollars.
Hungary confirmed it is holding an American Air Force transport and its four crew members after Soviet fighters forced it down two weeks prior. A U S legation spokesman said the Americans are safe with no further details. Tass reported the plane carried diplomatic pouches and planned to pick up spies in Yugoslavia. The craft was forced down near Papa, Hungary, after crossing borders while the Soviet fighters operated from Hungarian bases.
North Korea's Pyongyang radio said troops seized the islands Taehwa and Yol about 50 miles south of the Yalu River. The broadcast claimed 400 South Koreans and Americans were killed or wounded and three Allied ships captured in the November 2 amphibious assault. An unidentified air strike hit U S 3d Infantry on the western front, with investigators to determine if it was a Communist or UN plane.
Ada Marrs Hastings of Oberlin born December 4 1880 in Faribault Minnesota died this morning at Allen Hospital after months of illness. She taught piano at Oberlin Conservatory from 1905 to 1946 and was member of First Church and Pi Kappa Lambda. Survivors include daughter Mrs David H Edwards son James, a brother, and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending with Cawling-Sadgieman Funeral Home. Rev Joseph Kinear will officiate at Westwood cemetery interment.
Panmunjom reports indicate data gathering on Allied war prisoners for a potential mass exchange if an armistice is signed. A Paris correspondent claims the Reds began assembling names and facts, while Allied officials cite 10,586 missing soldiers and 124 known prisoners of war.
Three people were hurt in a collision at Kingsleys Corners southeast of Grafton on Saturday. Vehicle driver Walter Batton of Sowley Road was cited for failure to yield. Batton and his wife Susie, 36, were treated for injuries at Elyza Memorial Hospital, and their daughter Joan, 5, was hospitalized for head and chest injuries before later being discharged.
Common Pleas Judge D A Conrimother and daughter were granted citizenship today to 35 aliens in Lorain County. Mrs Margaret Burnet of 518 Mast Riverstivet, a native of Scotland and former Canada resident, and her daughter Mrs Orchid Masterer took the oath of allegiance administered by Clerk H. E Agate. Another daughter, Mrs Ann, and two more daughters from Canada were noted as citizens elects. Judge Cook urged the new citizens to participate in community affairs and government as city residents of Elyria. The group included several residents of Elyria admitted to citizenship today. A Silver Card from Playmakers was shown at the High School Auditorium for Curtain at 30 dollars, with prices listed for adults and students.
Communists agreed to a total arms freeze and to invite neutral nations to supervise inspections behind the lines. The plan, a historic concession, could affect U S Army rotation and jet airfield construction while a UN subcommittee works out details. 21 questions were posed by UN negotiators as they seek clarity on which nations would police the armistice.
Funeral services for Pvt. Raymond Edward Willard 20 and Pvt. Robert ML Young 29, both members of the Third Armored Cavalry at Fort Knox, were announced. Willard’s rites are Tuesday at 2 pm at Andrews Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Brown officiating and burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Willard, son of Joan Willard and Mae Harvard, previously lived in Wellington and Elyria, served two years in the Navy, and attended Oberlin public schools. Young’s body was shipped to St Marys, Pennsylvania for burial after services at Andrews Funeral Home.
