Reds Claim East Germans Smuggle Food to West Berlin

Berlin dispatch says East Germans face charges of using the American food aid program as a cover for smuggling butter eggs bread marmalade vegetables fruit meat from the Soviet zone to West Berlin. ADN alleged officials in West Berlin aided the activity as a propaganda effort aimed at undermining aid. About 70,000 West Germans defied Communist threats to enter West Berlin for scarce food despite warnings of job and home loss.

Arrest of 3,000 East German agitators at West German border

Bonn officials said nearly 3,000 East German Communist agitators were arrested after trying to slip into West Germany to disrupt Sundays parliamentary elections. Police along the Soviet zone border halted an anticipated invasion, with agitators armed with forged papers and propaganda.

Three Norwalk Men Held After Pistol Firing Incident

Three Norwalk men aged 18 22 and 30 were held in the county jail after a highway incident Saturday at 9 40 p m when Allan Harrison Route 1 Wellington did not stop for them. They claimed the car broke down and all had been drinking. One man admitted firing after the car passed but said the bullet was not directed at the vehicle. The pistol was found in the car’s front grill.

Three Pedestrians Injured By Cars

Three pedestrians were injured in separate city accidents reported Saturday by police. Ernest Lentz, 80, of 329 Eleventh Street, was struck at Fifteen and West avenues by a car driven by China Lee Gardner Lorain at 11 p.m. He was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital for hand burns and head bruises and released. David Kerchner, 5, of 623 Hilliard Road, was hit at Middle and Broad when he ran from between parked cars into a car driven by Harry West Jr., 526 East River. The boy’s father said it was his son’s fault. he received bruises on the upper lip. Jonathon D Walker bruised his right elbow after walking around a truck at Cleveland Street and Harwood and being struck by the right front fender of a car driven by Tod Erb of Lakewood.

Navy plane to inspect turbulent area east of Florida

A navy plane was sent to study a turbulent zone about 300 miles east of Daytona Beach after a recent hurricane swept winds along the east coast. Reports from ships in the area placed the wind at 35 to 40 mph as the low pressure system moved northward. Thieves Burglary Hits Henry King Barber Shop

Deputies investigated a burglary at Henry King barber shop at 2020 North Ridge Road Vincent. The front door was pried open and about 10 in change along with cigars cigarettes razor blades lotions soap and related items valued at 147 were stolen from a display case.

Lone Bandit Robs Gas Station at Dawn in Elyria

Russell Henly, operator at the Elyria avenue and Route 254 station, was robbed at 6 35 a m as he opened. A medium build man wearing a red shirt and blue pants grabbed the bag containing 533 dollars, hid Henly in a back room, and escaped. Henly freed himself by breaking the lock with a hammer after the bandit fled. This is Henly s second robbery in about a year and the station has faced prior burglaries.
