Pope Visit Sparks Priesthood Interest Nationwide
The pope's U S visit next month spurs priesthood interest as dioceses seek successors to aging clergy. Detroit launches a 300000 ad campaign timed with the visit, using radio TV ads and billboards to recruit. Some inquiries exceed normal levels, including non Catholics. Seminars note prior pope’s impact. Des Moines reports doubled seminarians after 1979 visit, with ongoing enrollment above average. Catholic population rose 14 percent since 1966 while priest counts fell.
