Experts say courthouse's troubled past fuels its hopeful future

Elyria experts contend the 1881 Lorain County Courthouse can still be saved by careful retrofits and continued exterior preservation. They warn mothballing would hasten decay, and plans to relocate the urine lab and probation office may help stabilize the historic building though dome restoration remains uncertain.

Courthouse history spans Lorain County through three buildings

Lorain County Courthouse history traces the 1822 selection of Elyria as county seat, the 1828 red brick courthouse, and the 1881 Amherst sandstone structure by Elijah E. Myers. Remodellings in 1981-82 erased many historic features, with space needs pushing offices to the County Administration Building in 1978.

Lorain County weighs courthouse relocation and restoration plans

The county hired Clark & Post Architects for a 15000 study to guide moving the probation department and outline funding for future restoration. A partially occupied courthouse is preferred to be shuttered, with second floor judges' visits and a push to use land for a downtown parking lot.
