Hurri cane David raked Martinique as winds near 140 mph. Schools and parish halls across Dominica and St Lucia were turned into emergency shelters. Officials forecast the center passing near the island and urged residents to stay home as power outages hit Radio Dominica. Shelter measures and emergency preparations expanded across the Leeward Islands with no injuries reported.
Elyria pupils head back to class after a last minute three year contract settlement reached Thursday hours before a planned strike vote. Superintendent Showalter noted possible enrollment dip and reduced busing due to a consolidation program while transportation glitches were minimal but children faced longer walks in Elyria and nearby districts began classes with some districts opening later after Labor Day.
In Meyer Goldberg Inc bankruptcy, trustee Zipkin asks court to approve settling his claim that a 1978 Buick LeSabre was improperly transferred to Kenneth Goldberg before the filing. Zipkin sought suits against both Goldbergs to recover the vehicle but now supports a proposed sale of his title and interest in the car for $4,200. Hearing set for Sept. 20 at 11:30 a.m.
In Cuyahoga County Probate Court, two unsigned letters warning of a government audit were admitted in the dispute over the $180 million Horvitz Trust. Trustee Francis E. Kane testified the 1976 letter to him appeared from Harry Horvitz to pressure him amid settlement talks.
Lorain County farm officials warn that continued rain threatens crops with a potential downturn if it lasts another week. If drier weather returns by September, yields may rebound. farmer Frank Herrmann notes sweet corn and soybeans have stalled, while Ashland County reports heavy rainfall in the last three weeks.
