Washington prepares for Pope's October visit
Washington braces for Pope John Paul II's U.S. itinerary October 1 to 7 with a mass on the National Mall planned for October 7. Officials anticipate up to one million attendees, prompting extensive logistics around camping on the Mall and security for the open-air event. The pope is expected to visit the White House and meet President Carter, with possible talks at Catholic University of America and a meeting with Protestant leaders.
