Lorain County Fair crowd hits new attendance record

The 98th Lorain County Fair in Wellington drew crowds 25 percent above prior fairs. A power outage darkened the grandstands during the nationalities program while Johnny Pecon and His Polka Band provided music. Corrina Cid, five, wowed the crowd with a mambo dance, earning gladioli. Harness racing featured a dramatic finish as Flying Chance fell and Tippy Law cleared the scene, with Roy Mosher sustaining head injuries. Continued on Page 2.

Sprinkling Ban Effective At Once In Elyria

Elyria imposes a sprinkler ban from noon to 10 pm daily until further notice. Safety Director G Ralph Terry cited low water pressure and depleted storage as reasons, with 20 psi last night vs normal 40 psi. The lakefront pumping station yesterday pumped 10.61 million gallons but 10.7 million were used.

Cpl Norris Freed By Communists In Korea Release

Cpl. Alvi D. Norris formerly of Elyria is among 144 U S soldiers listed as war prisoners freed by Communists in Korea. Parents Mr and Mrs George Norris, now in Brunswick, Ohio, had learned he was missing since November 1950 and later reported he was in good condition. Norris enlisted after World War II, rejoined after civilian spell, and earned two Oak Leaf Clusters and a Bronze Star. His family awaits immediate transport home as telegrams confirm his well being.

Quick Action Saves Norwalk Man From Heart Attack

South Amherst fire department actions saved Alexander Martin after a heart attack struck him in a car on Route 113. He rolled to the pavement when the door opened and was revived with artificial respiration and oxygen en route to Amherst Hospital. He was later released. Two other men rode with him.

Fish Hooks Removed From Man After Fishing Incident

Donald Capal aged 29 of Parma was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital Lorain at 1 15 am for removal of fish hooks caught in his left ear and cheek while fishing at Vermilion on the Lake. Capal said a friend pulling in his line caused the injury, according to a sheriff’s report.

Northeastern Ohio Weather Outlook Warm Temperatures Continue

Sunny and hot in Northeastern Ohio with highs near 95 this afternoon and continuing warm through Saturday. Lows around 68 tonight with fair skies. Winds from Lake Erie at 15 mph this afternoon into Saturday. Five day forecast calls for mostly fair hot weather through Wednesday, with a prospect of scattered showers and slightly cooler conditions by Tuesday or Wednesday. Normal highs 79 to 83, lows around 60s to 70s. precipitation about a quarter inch for the period.

County Welfare Funds Face Possible Cuts This Year

County relief budgets may need cutting as welfare funds run low. Auditor Frank Ayres reports only 46,000 dollars left, to last until February when new money from special relief excise taxes arrives. Welfare Director Waterhouse warns the outlook is not bright and cuts may be needed to stretch funds through February.

Elyria Man Wounded in Chest Stabbing

Robert Hendley of 1400 South Prospect Street was admitted to Elyria Memorial Hospital with a chest stab wound after three stitches. He told police Holloway of 201 Delaware stabbed him during an argument, while Holloway claimed Hendley threatened him with a knife and created the situation.

Two Boys Taken In Custody After Thrilling Chase

A dramatic pursuit ends with two youths ages 17 and 15 in custody after seven officers chased a speeding 1939 two door sedan through West avenue and Broad street. The driver turned lights on and off, sped through several streets, and authorities secured the license number before juvenile authorities took charge.

India withdraws from bid for Korean conference seat

UNITED NATIONS New York India withdrew from the race for a seat at the Korean political conference urging the General Assembly not to force a decision. Delegate V K Krishna Menon said India was not running but feared adding heat to the matter. The political committee passed a resolution favoring Britain’s Commonwealth bid 27 to 21, short of a two thirds majority. The United States welcomed Menon’s move as prudent while reiterating support for India’s later central role in Far Eastern affairs. Russia blocked a full debate on the issue with a 36 11 vote. The conference plan hinges on U S backed terms and would be set to begin by October 28.

Two Children Hit By Shot Gun Pellets Near Riverside Homes

Two boys aged 4 and 5, Jonathon and Donald Smith, Sons of Rev Frank M Smith, were struck by shotgun pellets while on a Riverside Homes back porch. Police report pellets hit at least 48 spots on the rear of 41 Riverside Homes from an undetermined source. Jonathon was struck on the left side and Donald on the upper back. both were treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital where pellets were not embedded.
