Washington officials say housing needs and modernization drive vast growth. Government experts estimate the housing industry offers the greatest potential market in history as the nation recovers from downturn. Estimates indicate millions of new jobs and programs tied to construction and modernization of dwellings.
Government projections indicate housing construction could lead national recovery on par with the automobile industry's 1920s surge. Officials estimate at least 3 million new dwelling units are needed, with a potential market of roughly 14 to 15 billion dollars. Existing homes require billions more in modernization, with millions already insured or awaiting FHA credit. Obsolescence rising as most homes date from earlier decades, driving demand for replacement or major remodeling while mass production is urged to lower costs.
