Monroeville Sets Final Day of Classes for Oct 7

Monroeville will finish classes October 7 after a 90 minute meeting with state officials in Columbus. Supt Donald Halsey says revenue may keep the district open until the first Friday in October, then it would be broke and shut until January 2, 1978. The district plans a new calendar for state approval and notes the irony of opening early to avert last year's closures.

Blue Cross Rate Increases 37 Percent Approved

Ohio Insurance Department Director Harry Jump approved a 37 percent rate increase for Blue Cross of Northeast Ohio affecting about 160 000 non group subscribers. The examiners had recommended less and cited insufficient cost control. A spokesman said substantial losses are expected from non group operations even with the hike. Premiums for some subscribers drop 7 percent under the proposal, including individuals and families with low option policies who pay 20 percent of hospital bills.

64 years later women march for rights in Washington

The 1913 suffrage parade revived with a new goal to push the Equal Rights Amendment. Carter urged action, met feminist groups in the Rose Garden, and called on citizens to pressure states to ratify ERA. He cited 31,000 discriminatory laws and directed agencies to root out sexism. Dogs may guard KSU gym site

COLUMBUS UPI Kent State University plans a campus gym near the 1910 Kent State shootings site. The state may use guard dogs to deter protesters after Firemen's Fund Insurance Co canceled coverage amid May 4 Coalition protests. The state may insure the area itself and erect a patrol perimeter fence. Construction is delayed at least through September 4 as legal challenges unfold.
