Heavy rains caused the Marshyhope Creek dam to collapse above Federalsburg Maryland releasing a torrent that forced scores of residents to flee. No loss of life reported and authentic estimates say one fifth to one third of Federalsburg inundated as about 100 families evacuated Monday night and another dozen today. Federalsburg, a town of about 500 on Maryland's Eastern Shore near the Delaware border, previously faced a 1995 flood causing millions in damages.

About 700 members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers on the Reading Railroad were authorized to strike beginning 4 am Thursday. Grand Chief Engineer Guy L. Brown announced from Cleveland that negotiations since November 1956 failed to yield a settlement. The dispute centers on health and safety measures, discipline investigations, protections for engineers on leave, and extended layover rest facilities. Brown said he met Reading President J. A. Fisher in Philadelphia at month end to push a settlement.

Bus Crash in Indiana Injures 50 People
A Greyhound bus hit a semi trailer and veered into a field near Cook Indiana injuring at least 50 with eight in critical condition. The crash occurred en route to Chicago and victims were taken to hospitals in Hammond Gary and Crown Point. The bus driver was among the critically hurt and trapped before rescue crews freed him.
