On Koje Island August 11 US and UN guards fired buckshot and tear gas to quell a disturbance by 38 Communist prisoners of war in Enclosure 12. A British Canberra jet led by R P Beamont crossed the Atlantic in a round trip from Alder Grove, North Ireland to Gander, Newfoundland and back in 10 hours 2 minutes.
