Attorney seeks court order to place anti tax measure on ballot

Lorain County attorney Gerald Phillips asks the Ohio Supreme Court to force the Lorain County Board of Elections to put an anti sales tax initiative on the November ballot. The board voted 2-1 against the measure after state law concerns over a second referendum on the 0.25 percent tax hike. Innes says the law allows a referendum within 30 days of approval, but signatures fell short. Phillips argues the law applies to nonemergency measures. officials expect a Supreme Court ruling may be needed. Critics say the tax ignored voters who rejected the measure in November, which would have raised about 10 million annually. Contact Brad Dicken at 329-7147.
