Two Elyria men were detained by Lorain County deputies after a 2 a.m. shooting near Oberlin Road left 24 year old Robin Cromer critically injured in her yard near her car. A .357 Magnum was found in the suspects car after a minor traffic accident in Avon.
Former President Richard Nixon hosts two events over Labor Day weekend in California and New York. A Sept 2 poolside buffet honors former Attorney General John Mitchell with about 200 guests, many connected to Mitchell’s NY law practice. The following day Nixon plans a farewell neighborhood party for locals who have supported him.

Ronald Jackson president of Local 268 of the Amalgamated Transit Union called a mass meeting at Edgewater Park to persuade striking Cleveland bus drivers and rapid transit engineers to return to work by Monday morning. The unauthorized walkout, affecting up to 200,000 riders, began at two bus garages Friday and spread to the entire system amid reports of intimidation and vandalism.
At the United Nations Andrew Young, amid a swan song moment, criticized U.S. policy toward the PLO and secured a postponement of a Palestinian rights resolution. Arab leaders credited Young, stating the delay came from the Arab bloc and possibly from Yasser Arafat. The move preserves the contentious resolution on the Security Council table as Young departs.
In a tense Kennedy Airport stand off a Russian Aeroflot jet carrying Ludmila Vlasova wife of defecting Bolshoi star Aleksandr Godunov was kept from leaving the United States. State Department officials sought to determine if she was being coerced to return to Russia while Godunov, who defected earlier, urged talks to ensure she knows all facts.
At Kennedy Airport a Soviet woman aboard Aeroflot LD-62 was prevented from leaving by U.S. officials who demanded she be allowed to speak under her own will. About 40 of 125 aboard, non-Soviet citizens, including a Moscow tour group, disembarked after a 10 hour delay.
