CARP Finances Studied As Townsend Faces Questioning

In Cleveland on August 25 Dr. Francis Townsend was recalled to explain the fate of about 1.2 million collected by Old Age Revolving Fensions Ltd. The organization has only around 50,000 left and Townsend could not account for the rest. Complainants’ attorney Benjamin Sacharow and California QU.A.R. group members urged Treasurer Baxter Rankine and Secretary Gilmour Young to clarify several points including employee payments, a costly California follower jaunt to Washington, a cash request to the treasury, and cross country trips for Townsend's wife. In Columbus, Robert H. Cotton, 80, longtime associate of the late Gov. George K. Mash, died after a life in law. In Zanesville, Lt. James Dow’s plane made a forced landing while en route to St. Louis due to a fuelline issue.

The Silent Observer and Oddities in a Patchwork Tale

A fragmented page features snippets from a humor column and anecdotes. It includes lines about a dog pedigree inquiry, a lion at a telephone office, a lawyer’s fee for murder defense, camp Knox jokes, and a tall tale of Honest John guiding a mountain and a tree in pursuit of peaches. The collage-style piece preserves quirky dialogue and old-time newspaper flavor without a single cohesive report.

The Curse of Inheritance and Persistence Motifs

Fragmented prose fuses quirky lines about a lone peach lumber house in Pennsylvania and a cast iron deer with a curiously moral thread. It mixes odd dialogue on lawns and a monarch’s guard with a Calvin Coolidge quotation on persistence and a 1935 billionaire ledger listing major firms and banks.
