China to host smoking health conference amid domestic debate
Bejing hosts the tenth Smoking or Health conference as China debates smoking policy. Health experts from around the world converge while the country, home to about one third of the world's smokers, weighs tobacco’s economic role against rising health costs. Premier Li Peng calls selling cigarettes immoral, as China National Tobacco Corp. expands exports to 650 million dollars yearly. About 70 percent of Chinese men smoke, far fewer women, though the rate for women climbs.
