Under ideal conditions the Lorain County Fair opened its first day with a festive midway and new rides including a double ferris wheel and sky ride. Snoopy tours by helicopter arrive for ground visits while Hi Fi Joe plays music in the picnic pavilion. Tonight Bill Anderson performs and Roy Clark and Danny Fleenor shows are planned. director elections and strong livestock attendance mark a promising start.

U.S. frees $800 million for home loans, cuts cost

The government moved to stabilize mortgage rates and expand lending. The Federal Home Loan Bank Board cut reserve requirements by up to $800 million, freeing funds for home buyers, while the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation trimmed costs, lowering a $20 000 mortgage by about $600 and committing $300 million to buy FHA and VA mortgages.
