Wanda Butts turned grief into action after her 16 year old son Josh drowned in a lake four years ago. She created a low cost program teaching inner city black children to swim, addressing a racial gap in swimming ability and drowning risk. Since starting, 800 kids have enrolled and summers bring waiting lists.
Eldhrist Winery in Plain City and 18 other Ohio vineyards received $2,000 grants from the Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program funded by the USDA. A 29 year old Cincinnati man, Joseph Needels, died after climbing onto a car roof on I 275, being tossed by rough pavement, and was run over by a tractor trailer and another vehicle. Investigators say alcohol or drugs may have been a factor and no charges were filed. I 275 was closed about five hours.
An 85 year old man Richard Heritz was arrested at Warren Correctional Institution in Ohio for attempting to smuggle marijuana to his grandson Gregory Heritz who is serving time for burglary. He faces up to seven years and a 15000 dollar fine. Prison records show 168 smuggling incidents investigated this year.
