Fires sweep British drought areas
Six counties in southern England and Wales battled fires through the night as drought turned the countryside into a tinderbox. About 3,000 people were evacuated including 1,000 from a country club and 360 from St Leonard's Geriatric Hospital. Ten plus fire crews faced heat and smoke, with 50 homes destroyed and no towns threatened. Major rail lines and highways were closed as troops and volunteers fought blazes near Hurn Forest, while water shortages threaten rationing if rain does not return.
