Americans find three Congo mission officers safe

Three officers attached to a U S military mission in the Congo have been found safe and sound. Col William A Dodds 50 Lt Col Donald W Rattan 40 and Col Lewis Macfarlane 25 were reported safe by a Kigali message to Washington. Details to follow.

Wallace dodges pledge on Alabama aid to Johnson at convention

At Atlantic City Wallace refused to say whether Alabama would back President Johnson. The Credentials Committee considered seating Alabama and Mississippi delegates amid a challenge to Mississippi's all white delegation. Wallace warned of a possible third party if the Democrats fail civil rights reforms and postponed final stance until he reviews both party platforms and nominees.

Joy ride death boosts Lorain County toll to thirty seven

A joy ride killed Billy Jones, 17, and injured Gray, 18, as a car driven by Jackie Dean collided with a Sohio tractor-trailer at Rt 301 and Rt 10. The crash, part of Lorain County's 37th traffic death in 1964, spilled into the No. 10 Club parking lot and involved six more vehicles. Jones, a Western Reserve High School junior, died instantly. Gray was hospitalized in uncertain condition.

Turkish Red Crescent delivers aid to Kokkina under UN escort

A Turkish Red Crescent truck with food departed Nicosia under UN escort to break the Greek siege of Kokkina. The village, last Turkish stronghold on Cyprus northwest coast, had been cut off for 17 days amid Greek Cypriot attacks. Eight die in head on crash near Sanford North Carolina

Eight persons were killed when two cars collided head on eight miles south of Sanford on Highway 1. Seven died instantly and another died en route to a hospital. A child survivor was hospitalized in critical condition. Further details were not immediately available.
