Black River optimistic despite small squad in 1979 season
Black River coach Thane Hecox enters his second season with a 5-5 mark last year, optimistic about improvement despite limited size and depth. The Pirates return most offensive starters led by fullback Alen Clement who also punts and kicks, while quarterback Jim Clifford and ends Ken Cline, Kipp Belt, and Eric Tomko anchor a run-heavy plan with tests of the passing game in scrimmages. The biggest concerns are interior line and defense as the team aims to contend in the Firelands Conference with Edison and South Central favored.
