Nixon on flight to Mexico for border and drug talks

President Nixon leaves for Puerto Vallarta for 28 hours of talks with President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz on border disputes drug traffic and joint efforts to stem heroin and marijuana smuggling. The trip includes discussions on Operation Cooperation watershed issues and river division.

Ohio considers 55 day duck season with split two-part plan

The Ohio Wildlife Council is poised to approve a 55 day waterfowl season with a six duck per day limit in two parts: Oct 16 to Dec 3 and Dec 28 to Jan 2. A $2 bonus birds per day may apply for scaup if federal rules align, while a nine day period could allow two blue wings daily.

Kent State shooting hearing hears from General Canterbury

Gen. Robert H. Canterbury testified before the President's Commission on Campus Unrest about a shot fired from an area with no guardsmen just before Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on Kent State University students on May 4. Four students died and nine were wounded. Canterbury said no direct order to fire was given.

Canterbury blasts U S probe at Kent

Lt. Gen. Robert Canterbury, former Ohio National Guard commander on the Kent State campus strike May 4, criticizes the Presidents Commission hearings. He says the timing is wrong as a grand jury action looms and questions about indicting guardsmen could be used in future actions. He defends ordering the 96 guardsmen to charge rioting students and notes fear of cross examination. He urges readers to turn to page 4 for more.

Black River School District Supt. Dies In Auto Crash

Black River School District Superintendent Donald Larabee, 48, was killed when his car was struck by a milk truck at the intersection of Ashland County Road 40 and West Road near the high school. The second fatality on the county road within 24 hours. Larabee had served the district 17 years and helped launch a scholarship in memory of student Marjorie Rook who died in a plane crash two weeks earlier.
