President Eisenhower stated there can be no equivocation about the federal government's duty to enforce court rulings on school integration. He warned that federal authority will be used if states resist compliance.
President Eisenhower today flatly ruled out any government controls to curb inflation. He urged labor and management prudence and reduced government spending as the best cures for the wage price spiral, saying Congress is on a spending cycle and vetoed bills seen as costly. The White House projected a 12 billion dollar deficit this year while stressing deterrence of Soviet indirect aggression and a prompt Lebanon force withdrawal once authorized or UN prepared. He reaffirmed state responsibility to uphold court mandates and warned against any state defiance of federal judgment.
Attendance at the county fair reached 24 000 over two days with 16 500 on the second day as families and youngsters filled Lola grounds. The president spoke of civic duty and the need to respect court orders while weather favored a long weekend of exhibits and amusements. A 21-year-old Collins man, Robert Plass, died at Memorial Hospital from head and internal injuries after a high speed crash near Berlin Heights. Alva A. Stark, 15, of Vermilion, was listed in fair condition with possible broken back and ribs after being struck on Berlin Road by Ruth Trinter of Vermilion. The accident occurred when a motor scooter failed to negotiate a curve and skidded into Mason Road. Stark was injured in the second collision involving the Stark youth’s motorscooter and a car. The report notes ongoing investigations by Erie County Sheriff deputies.
A local woman refused to vacate the laundry room after selling her old washer wringer and tubs with Chronicle Telegram Want Ads.
