Elyria's American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps returned from Cincinnati with their third consecutive state championship as about 10,000 residents lined the streets and filled Ely Park to greet the victorious unit. The celebration reflected the city’s strong ties to the corps and its history of success.
Pictures on page five show the Elyria American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps in action at the state convention in Cincinnati. A. L. Werner arranged a greeting, the city band led the Legionnaires through the street, and at Ely Park talks and congratulations followed. Speakers included Mayor Hewitt, Congressman Setherling, and Legion commander Charles Persons. Ferguson said the corps will not defend the state title next year, favoring a chance for others to win, but vowed to excel at the national convention in Boston.
The Elyria Drum and Bugle Corps won Ohio's state championship for the third straight time at Cincinnati and earned a spot in the $19,900 National Legion Contest in Boston this October. Members vow to bring the national trophy home, with intensive rehearsals and last night's parade to Emery Auditorium where the Silver Loving Cup was awarded.

Lorain County political factions prepare for fall elections with county and Elyria meetings. Elyria City Republican committee to organize for the two year term and elect Elyria members of the executive group. County Central committee of 157 members will reconvene at the Court House for biennial reorganization and to confirm executive appointments.

Cecil Stu Hawley established a new transcontinental round trip auto record for New York. The Los Angeles leg took 67 hours 38 minutes, and the return 69 hours 20 minutes after a brief rest. The previous record stood at 166 hours.
San Antonio August 20 John Livingston and W G Moore proved to the aviation world that it takes only two to make a race in the Brownsville to Chicago air derby. The class B racers warmed up at Fort Worth before the second lap while the others dropped out. Livingston led the Sela to Winburgs airport with an elapsed time of 4 32 18. Moore from Kansas City followed six minutes later at 4 38 02.
Alex Altfeld of 324 Fourth street reported to police early today that two men were siphoning gasoline from his car. He frightened them away. they fled in a car with a foreign license. A gas can and funnel were left behind.
Wilmington Ohio dated report says A W Lensgraf a 30 year old chiropractor will face manslaughter charges over the death of Vernon Scanth two son of Ralph Scanth of Wilmington Coroner Kinzel noted the death from cholera and an autopsy testimony states Lensgraf directed discontinuing medical treatment and using his methods.
Police Chief E J Stankard warned local merchants today to beware counterfeit New York Central Railroad pay checks. Reports of successful forgeries have come from Toledo Sandusky and several eastern points. The fakes mimic real checks but bear a false locomotive image and lack smoke from the engine. Stankard advised not cashing checks from suspicious arrangers.
Paris reports Marshal Joseph Joffre told a visiting Catalonian delegation the war's history in twenty words. He said a people once dreamed of world hegemony, France ruined their project, and this was done at the Marne.
In Quayahoga Falls Ohio labor warfare peaked as police and masked watchmen traded fire with alleged Cleveland union thugs near Shaw Avenue. Over 100 shots were fired. no injuries reported. A sniper fired on Garner Construction Co guards. a bomb hit a tool shack but caused little damage. Carl Garner escaped injury though a bullet hit his hat. Police drove attackers into nearby woods ending the battle.
Police Chief Jacob Graul of Cleveland resigns as Safety Director Edwin D. Barry announced. The letter requests retirement and pension by January 3 with Inspector George J. Matowitz expected to succeed. Graul will have 34 years in service January 4 and Barry says the resignation takes effect October 15. Both officials commended Graul in statements.
A Negro couple led by William Linder petitions Judge Edmond K. Jareski to adopt Joseph Julian, seven months old with red hair, whose mother does not want him and father disclaims support. The child is alleged to be son of Joseph A Murphy and Rose Julian. The case hinges on guardianship and parental rights.
Washington reports drought relief likely to require congressional appropriations for next winter. President Hoover and Hyde announce the national drought relief committee, with Payne as Red Cross chair, to coordinate aid as 300 counties face distress and weather worsens. Washington August 70 Federal Prohibition Administrator Amos W W Woodcock announced a new enforcement reform requiring dry agents to display a large black and white metal shield of identification when stopping cars suspected of liquor transport. The shield measures 17 inches by 20 inches and bears the word Stop at the top with United States beneath.
Mrs S J of 405 Cornell Ave reports rapid sale of household goods after her advertisement first appeared. She says she was rushed with calls all evening and next morning and had everything sold by then. The advertiser claims reviews prove that ads bring results.
