Population shifts and Chinese immigration to the Philippines
The piece argues that Philippine population movement tilts toward China with about 1,000 Filipinos leaving monthly for Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific coast while 1,000 Chinese arrive monthly from Foochow and Amoy. It notes legal barriers, forged birth certificates, and a broader pattern of labor migration, including Filipinos moving to Hawaii and California for low wages. It also touches on graft, the “squeeze” culture, and a changing island demographics shaping future monuments.
