Vitamins linked to slower age related hearing loss in elderly women

A study of 55 women aged 60 to 71 found impaired hearing correlated with lower vitamin B-12 and folate levels. Normal hearing participants consumed roughly twice as much B-12 and folate, suggesting nutrition may influence age related hearing decline. Further research aims to develop dietary guidance.

Nocturnal butterflies gain wing ears to outpace bats

Researchers Jayne Yack and James Fullard report that the Hedyloidea group, including Macrosoma heliconaria on Barro Colorado Island, evolved ears on their wings enabling ultrasound detection. When exposed to bat echolocation, these butterflies dive and speed up by about 400 percent to evade predation, supporting bats as a driving evolutionary force and linking hedylids to modern butterfly groups Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea.

Surgery cured vertigo and falls in five patients, with high success for complete hearing loss cases and non surgical injections as alternatives.

Manatees' Hearing Limits May Hinder Boat Avoidance

A Florida Atlantic University study shows manatees hear best around 17 kilohertz with a 50 decibel threshold, while low frequency boat motors around 2 kilohertz are often inaudible. Researchers trained two captive manatees to a hearing test using tones and lights to map sensitivity and hope high frequency beacons on motors alert them.
