Lisbon reports Secudo dispatch says rebels seized Almendraleja fifty miles southeast of Badajoz after five days of siege in a parish church tower. Loyalists suffered 500 dead and 1,500 prisoners. 43 defenders were led out and shot after court martial.
United Press reports Aug 18 that Loyalist forces fight to save the Red Madrid government by gas on the northern front. General Emilio Mola announces plans for three columns from Badajoz toward Madrid, with Franco and Mola to confer weekly. Rebels aim to split the Popular Front and undermine Madrid authorities as a northern and southern axis consolidate toward Catalonia.
The board of county commissioners and County Engineer J W Warden attended a state highway hearing in Ashland about 12 miles of Lorain county roads the state may adopt. The Fos ter Park road Berea road and New London Laf ayette road across Black River Ridgeville Huntington and Rochester townships are under consideration. Only Vermilion road from Route 20 south has been accepted so far.

A fruitless search by Dog Warden Lee Minkler and Deputies Ed Monroe and Chalmer Davidson for a wild mongrel collie near Kelner's turkey farm south of La Grange ended without capture. The dog had already caused depredations costing the county $60 in cattle and sheep claims. Minkler, told the dog was attacking turkeys, planned to shoot but could not locate the animal. The turkeys escaped unharmed as the box approached.
Two army fliers were killed during maneuvers near Otsego when their pursuit ship caught fire during a power dive. Second Lieutenant Wild W. Harding of Los Angeles and Francis Maier bailed out but perished after failed parachute deployment or delayed rip cord. The fatalities mark the first deaths in the nationwide army maneuvers involving 24,000 troops and National Guard units.
Carl Kothe 48, former Amherst resident, died of a heart attack while driving near his Newton Center home. He was president of a New England Intersections clearing organization, a Mason and Shrine member, and surviv ed by wife Blanche Williams, daughter Doris, mother Mrs Louis Kothe, and brothers Henry and August. Funeral services are set for Thursday afternoon in Newton Center.
Storms swept seven midwestern states as heat killed nearly 50 people since Aug. 1. Forecasters warned no relief from extreme temperatures in the dust bowl area. Rain cooled parts of several states while 109 degree readings persisted. Forest fires raged in northern Wisconsin Minnesota and Michigan. Federal drought relief chief Howard Hunter said four in five Dakota families were destitute and at least 129,000 farmers would require aid.
Mrs Catherine Rauscher of Carlisle Township was announced as teacher for Hussia Township School No 3 on Schramm Road. A Kent State University graduate, she previously taught in Carlisle and Brooklyn, Cuyahoga County. She will replace Miss Mabel Spaeth, who moves to Clearview School to succeed Miss June Harrison, who resigns to take an art teaching post in the county system.

NEW YORK August 18 Joe Louis weighed in with a slight advantage over Jack Sharkey for their ten round heavyweight title fight at Yankee Stadium.
