Large New York Grain Elevator Demolished for Taxes

One of Manhattan’s largest buildings, Elevator A of the New York Central Railroad, is being torn down to reduce tax burdens. Built in 1890 at the edge of Deep Hudson River, it stored up to 1.5 million bushels and shipped grain to Europe. The demolition follows a dispute with Commissioner Robert Moses over a highway curve, with the railroad preferring to preserve the structure. The site will be landscaped after Park Row post office removal, reshaping City Hall Plaza.
