London reports Britain plans an unprecedented British Poland alliance to pledge mutual aid against direct and indirect aggression. The draft includes armed-forces aid and an economic pledge, aiming to deter Lithuania and other regional threats while ensuring Poland’s independence.
Berlin reports a new Nazi campaign demanding the Polish Corridor and Danzig. Editorials show no compromise and liken it to past campaigns, while arrests in East Silesia spark claims of German terror and mass detentions. The Mo1n Post and Voelkischer Beobachter cite hundreds of Germans taken for forced labor and imprisonment, reflecting intensifying pressure.
Elyria Emortal Hospital treated a two year old Dale Saegert after a bottle of chlorine fluid was seen near him. Doctors pumped his stomach but believed no liquid was ingested. Two younger siblings had previously drunk gasoline leading to a death.

Nathan Brenner, 15, son of Mr and Mrs A M Brenner of 405 Middle Avenue, won Elyria’s 1939 Soap Box Derby title with a 16 second 325 foot run, beating Louis Kaplan by two feet in the final heat. Brenner claimed four heat wins, the best time of the afternoon, as a crowd of about 5000 watched.
Lan plastered telegram from Hay Brown Jr, son of a Pennsylvania Supreme Court chief justice, sent to President Roosevelt. The message asks why Christmas cannot be changed to Roosevelt's birthday.
In Columbus on Aug 17, Payless vacations of one month and a 10 percent salary reduction were outlined as the bleak outlook for employees at Republican State Headquarters if State Chairman Ed D Schorr pursues a retrenchment plan. The party reports a $75000 deficit from the last campaign and has not yet paid it.
Paul Shaff a 30 year old restaurant proprietor drowned at the YMCA pool in Charleston. He could not swim and apparently fell into the pool after leaving the shower room. A deep cut on his forehead suggested he struck the pool edge and was knocked unconscious. He was alone at the time.
Alex Ewashinka, 48, arrested at West River and Filbert after storekeeper alerted police to a bogus half dollar. Officers found five counterfeit halves, moulds, sand and metal for production, plus a bag of moulding material. Ewashinka admitted prior federal counterfeiting terms, last release 72 days ago. He will be held for federal authorities.
Five armed men with sawed-off shotguns robbed the Wyoming Bank and Trust in North Philadelphia at noon, fleeing with about 15 000 dollars after forcing teller Mary Bunn to hand over cash while customers and staff were held at gunpoint. The automotive getaway vehicle had been stolen earlier in Bala Pa, police said, with officials hedging the final loot at around 15 000 dollars.
John Hart, 50, a Berea Municipal Light Plant employee, was electrocuted while on a pole near Baldwin Wallace College when he touched a 2300 volt line. His helper Paul Kole, 25, climbed the pole and the line broke contact. Hart’s body was lowered with a blocked tackle after the incident. A safety belt had kept him from falling.
Fritz Kuhn leader of the German American Bund testified before the Dies Committee that Attorney General Frank Murphy spoke at a Detroit German House meeting in 1936 about the German element. Kuhn denied Bund ties to the Nazi party and said German American groups had suffered persecution since 1932.
Charles Taylor 62 a Vermilion farm worker died at St Josephs Hospital Lorain from a head injury after a runaway horse kicked him while threshing at the Maurer farm on Trinter road near Vermilion yesterday. He was unconscious on arrival.
Chicago Aug 17 Drs Stanley Cobb Walter Bauer and Isabel Whiting of Boston say worry and poverty grief and family strain may relate to onset or flare ups of rheumatoid arthritis. Their study of 30 patients links financial stress and livelihood concerns with arthritis timing, noting varied strength of association across the group.
In Spokane Washington a gun duel near a garage left one robber dead and two police officers wounded. The dead man was identified as Robert Atkins. his companion Howard E Lyman, 23, was captured. Officer Henry Tesdahl Jr. was shot in the abdomen and left in critical condition. Officer Robert Johnson suffered a minor toe wound.
Aug 11 thieves robbed the Lee and Cannon wholesale grocery of 280 dollars and 36 cartons of cigars. The manager was bound and gagged by the robbers.
Police report the body of a woman about 32 was found in a trunk shipped from Washington DC to Atlanta. The trunk, sent August 15, arrived at 4:45 PM. Officials suspect the trunk buyer traveled on the same railway route and may have accompanied or refunded a ticket.
A Cleveland man Claude Albert aged 54 was killed when his car ran off Route 252 north of Route 82 and struck a tree. Miss Cathrine Sullivan 50 suffered multiple lacerations and possible pelvis fracture and was taken to Berea Hospital. A second crash on Broadway near Lorain left Harold Dangel in critical condition with multiple fractures after a motorcycle collision with a car driven by Robert Eberle. Willam Sipos sustained minor injuries as the motorcycle rider separated from the vehicle and was helped by bystanders. Grace Zinsmeister 50 received minor head lacerations when her car tipped after a collision on Routes 28 north of Oberlin.
Henry Nagorka, known as Elyrian, returns to 227 North Abbe Road from Warsaw, where he studies violin at the National Conservatory. He plans to resume two more years of study and has been a Polish radio announcer and producer, with short wave programs heard worldwide. He notes Poland’s recent events have drawn global attention.
