TV convention coverage fades from glory years to cable era
A Chronicle-Telegram report notes viewership of Republican and Democratic conventions has declined over 20 years. In 1968 a third of Americans watched, while 1984 fell to under 20 percent. Brisk network gavel to gavel coverage shifts to CNN and Span as cable news takes precedence.

Television networks and conventions redefine TV news dominance
NBC led GOP convention ratings in 1960s and 1968, CBS Cronkite dominated 1967 to 1981, and ABC won 1984 ratings during a shifting era. By the mid 1980s networks cut air time and staff as local outlets grow, with ratings debates over conventions fading and new coverage strategies emerging.

Networks bank on upscale viewers at conventions
Television coverage of the Democrats drew fewer gray suited reporters than in 1984, but networks see an upside. Advertisers target professionals and office managers, funding convention air time with autos, insurance, banking, and communications ads as networks chase stronger audiences amid a lean decade.

Bid Choice In Takeout Doubles For Venice Team Trials
In the June trials for the U S team to Venice, South faced a takeout double by partner Bob Hamman. A jump to three diamonds was chosen over one no bid, with two aces and a diamond ten as the deciding factors. Hamman then bid six diamonds, the hand led to ruffs and finesses, and the team secured 13 international matchpoints to help secure a 16 IMP margin in a crucial win.
