The FTC tested 166 cigarette brands across 50 states and found about one third had low tar and nicotine levels. Several brands showed notably low ratings while others remained high, highlighting industry shifts and calls for stronger labeling.
The West River Parkway Lowell Street and Lake Avenue intersection will be closed for 10 days beginning tomorrow to allow water valve work. Traffic will reroute via Foster Avenue and Lorain Boulevard with access maintained to a Sobio service station from the north and Greyhound terminal from the south on Lake Avenue. Work targets lowering valves not shown on plans, per city engineer Lonny G. Shippy.
Srest Bartha, assistant city health commissioner and chemist, said generally bay fewer sufferers notice the count when it reaches 100. Health Department, 202 Chestnut St., and Lorain Community Hospital lab will run daily pollen counts as readings reach 400.

Dr Stuart Kutler of Brecksville Ohio pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the beating death of his ex lover’s 8 year old son Arthur whose body has not been found. He faces 4 to 25 years in prison and a possible $10000 fine. The plea followed relations alleging complicity by Ann Marie Noske who claimed the child was lost at a suburb mall before changing her story. Prosecutors hope to recover the body for burial while continuing to press the case.
First Lady Rosalynn Carter underwent minor gynecological surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital. She entered the operating room at 6 30 am EDT for a routine dilation and curettage and returned to the Presidential Suite by 7 30 am. Press Secretary Mary Hoyt said she’s just fine. The President planned to pick her up later and fly with family to Camp David for a week-long vacation.
Amherst builder Bill Brandt of Brandt Construction plans a 10 unit Cobblestone Mini-Mall on Center Ridge Road near Ridgeview Shopping Center. Six retail shops and four professional offices would occupy two acres with Old World brick design and 25 skylights. Construction awaits state EPA approval. potential tenants include a bank branch, fast food outlet, insurance agency, dentist and others.
