Japan marks the surrender anniversary amid postwar prosperity and a booming war boom from American material contracts. The nation enjoys near full recovery with rising living costs, stagnant unemployment, and a strong export trade while communism gains little traction and national pride remains restrained.
Frank Smith a 17 year old Elyria Catholic High School graduate and caddie at Elyria Country Club has won a four year college scholarship from the Cleveland District Golf Association Caddie Foundation. He is the largest single award this year among seven recipients from a $4300 fund. Applicants are selected by interview and judged on need and scholastic standing.
Eisenhower campaign advisers see an advantage as confusion over top secret world affairs reports grows. New York man Aaron G. Bass, 40, had his car stolen and wrecked yesterday. Police recovered the vehicle and found 11 traffic tickets unpaid in the glove compartment. He was brought to court and fined 96 dollars.
Lorain County Commissioners authorize purchase of an 18,800 all welded steel bridge from American Culvert and Fabricating Company Cambridge. The prefabricated bridge will be installed on Foster Road Penfield Township replacing the 1867 structure on current abutments. Purchase approved at Thursday meeting.
John Hurlbert, 52, of Lakewood New York narrowly escaped serious injury when his tractor trailer struck the east end underpass piers on East Bridge Street. The rig loaded with 21000 pounds of rolled wire damaged the trailer and tractor front, with insurance covering the loss. Hurlbert pleaded guilty to failure to have the vehicle under control and was fined ten dollars with costs suspended.
North Olmsted fire chief William M. Biddulph 44 and his 18 year old Columbus guest were killed when a two seat Howard monoplanes crashed in the Dover road front yard of Rev. Philip Thayer yesterday at 5 PM. The youth Robert Kesselring was pronounced dead at 5 15 by Dr. Sheppard. Witnesses said the craft appeared to circle near the fire station before diving. The plane owned by Daniel Terlack had borrowed by Biddulph on several occasions and had taken off from Strauss Airport shortly before the crash. Parts of the plane scattered over the Thayer residence.
The CIO United Steelworkers reached formal contracts with Republic Steel Corp and Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp, ending a 55 day strike. The two year deals run through June 30 1954 with a reopen clause June 30 1953, affecting about 50 000 workers across Pittsburgh Aliquippa and Cleveland plants. Allegheny Ludlum remains idle after seven days without a contract.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved freight rate increases for more than 100 trucking firms operating in the state. The action expands rates across the trucking sector, affecting pricing for freight services and related operations in Ohio.
Elyria born Steel and Tubes celebrates 50 years of continuous operation under Republic Steel. The firm grew from the Elyria Iron and Steel Company founded in 1902 to four plants in Elyria Cleveland Detroit and Brooklyn forming Republic's Steel and Tubes Division. It now employs about 1700 people with last year wages over 7.2 million as it supplies tubular products for automotive and electrical sectors.

Salvador Franzia of Ripon California told police that a fortune teller named Andres urged him to carry ten thousand dollars for wellbeing. He followed the advice and has not seen either the money or Andres since.
