Battle lines form between Lorain County contractors and unions over next year’s contract. Each side cites rising wages and inflation as threats to profits and jobs. Expiring contracts for Carpenters Laborers and Bricklayers align April 30, with about 1,600 members. End quotes note bid pressures and in-plant work resistance.
Dr. Omar L. Olson, named president of Lorain County Community College, urged open accounting of tax dollars and community needs. He pledged strong leadership without authoritarianism, aims to move the college forward, and plans to spend Sept. 1 as chief. The 47-year-old educator comes from Harper College where he led evening and continuing education and has held roles at Gonzaga University and the University of Washington. He and his wife Margaret have four children.
Former Governor James A Rhodes ends a 10 million libel suit after Life magazine admits he did not act illegally or dishonorably when commuting mobster Yonnie Licavoli's sentence. Rhodes says the board's recommendation, health, and parole denial justify the decision, and Time Inc. and Life settle the matter without prejudice.
Three weeks from tonight hundreds of residents will travel to Blossom Center for the Lorain County Night event on September 3 featuring the Cleveland Orchestra led by conductor Louis Lane. Proceeds benefit the Lorain County Arts Council as sponsor Chronicle-Telegram notes.
Safety-service director James T. Tracey credited tavern owners for cooperation as Elyria orders prostitutes to leave downtown. A 24 hour notice was issued to depart town and return to their origin. West Broad Street area reported nine prostitution arrests this year.
Theodore Shirk of Spencer died after catching his pant leg on a bolt and falling from a construction site at Heidelberg College. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital, Tiffin, by the Seneca County Coroner. Police say the accident occurred about 2:15 p.m. and was not reported to them promptly. Shirk, an iron worker employed by Kilroy Construction Co., had recently completed his task and was descending when the fall occurred.
Mostly sunny and warmer today with highs in the low to mid 80s. Tonight will be in the 60s and skies may stay clear. Tomorrow turns cloudy with a chance of a few thunder showers and highs in the 80s. A 20 percent rain chance today and 30 percent tomorrow.

Randy Meyers, Lorain County soap box derby champion, suffered a steering failure during a trial run at Derby Downs. He veered toward a guardrail, damaged the racer, and cried, as family and officials vowed to repair for tomorrow’s All-American Soap Box Derby start.
