Former convict questioned in murders tied to torch deaths
Six men arrested for questioning in the Ann Arbor torch murders were exonerated at noon by Police Sergeant James Hogan. Two suspects were college students from Hope College and Assumption College. Herbert Smith a 21 year old ex convict linked to the revolver used in the killings was grilled by officers in Ypsilanti. The murder weapon, a .38 Iver Johnson, was identified by ballistics as the pistol that fired fatal bullets in the case.

A twenty foot wall of water from the Tehachapi Mountains unleashed a torrent that swept into Mathrone Canyon near Tehachapi. Two bodies were found with up to five feared dead.
