Slow responses hobble safety petitions to NHTSA
The AP examined 15 petitions filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since 2010 and found the agency missed four month deadlines 12 times with one 2012 petition still unresolved. In eight cases it took more than a year to open an investigation or close the case. Safety advocates warn delays risk lives and point to GM ignition switch recalls to criticize the agency.
