Vermilion youth injured in Route 6 crash

Daniel Dropko a Vermilion sophomore at Wittenberg College is in serious condition in the St Joseph Hospital ICU after a single vehicle crash on Route 6 a mile west of Vermilion. He swerved to avoid danger, hit a rock and flipped striking six boat trailers and a fence.

Northwest Ohio water plan sparks Lake Erie reservoir idea

A Sandusky meeting of the Northwest Ohio Water Development Advisory Council examined engineering reports proposing a chain of man made lakes from Elyria west toward the Indiana line. The system would supply water to about 150 communities over 40 years with impoundments in Black River Vermilion River and Huron River basins and possible sites near Wellington Wakeman and Charlemont Creek.

Wheaton resigns as Midview superintendent

Supt. E A Wheaton submitted his resignation and the Midview Local Board of Education accepted it in a brief meeting. He will leave Aug 29 to become superintendent in Napoleon. The board plans a special meeting to formalize the acceptance.

Rebel tugmen form Freedom Forces to challenge union delegate system

At the American Legion Hall in Lorain officers of the Tugmen's and Pilots' Freedom Forces were elected to oppose the convention delegate system. Captain John W. Degan leads a rebellion within Local 14 and the International Longshoremen's Association affiliate. The group plans federal court action to strike down what it calls dictatorial union control and aims to curb maritime leadership blamed for U.S. cargo decline.
