Chigger Bites Soothed By Carbolic Acid Lotion

A historical column notes chiggers or harvest mites bite farmers in late summer. It explains that adults don’t attack humans, but larvae on plants cause itching. They hatch in about three weeks, making late summer bites common while hot sun workers suffer nights of scratching.

The Chigger Menace In Fields And Grasslands

A vivid account describes chiggers as six legged red bugs that swarm in tall grass and grain. They latch onto clothing and skin, insert a long proboscis to suck blood, then drop off to perpetuate a life cycle. Immense itching and pain follow contact, with reactions varying by individual.

Chigger Prevention and Home Remedies from a Historic Note

The article describes chigger bites causing itching and sleep loss, notes higher impact on women and children, and suggests home remedies such as gasoline drops, iodine for buried heads, and an alcohol based lotion. It also mentions control with carbolic acid solution, sulfur as an ointment or dust, and warns of toxicity. It lists travel and visit items from local residents.
